Development and Origin: In the 1990s, Bombardier Aerospace began work on larger variants of its successful CRJ100/200 series. This program was officially launched in 1997. The CRJ700 first flew on 27 May 1999, and an extended CRJ900 variant was introduced soon after. From there, the entire CRJ family of regional jets was born.
Design and Construction: the CRJ700 was derived from the smaller CRJ100 and CRJ200. It had a longer fuselage, longer wing and improved General Electric CF34-8C engines. Aerodynamic changes included an extended horizontal stabilizer and an improved wing.
Competition: The CRJ700 competed with other regional aircraft such as the British Aerospace 146, Embraer E-Jet, Fokker 70 and Fokker 100.
Program Sales: In 2020, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries purchased the CRJ program, discontinued its production, and focused on its own aircraft.
