The Lockheed L-188 Electra was the first large turboprop transport aircraft built in the United States. It made its first flight in 1957 and was developed based on American Airlines' requirements.

History:
The Lockheed L-188 Electra was designed in response to an American Airlines request for a four-engine, 75-passenger aircraft with a range of 2,000 miles (3,200 km).
The first aircraft was delivered in 1958, but after two tragic accidents, expensive modifications were made due to a design flaw.

The aircraft was later converted to a cargo version and some are still in service.

Inclusion in the fleet:

American Airlines ordered the first 35 aircraft in June 1955, and the first Electra was delivered in December 1958.
Eastern Air Lines also ordered 40 aircraft.
The first commercial flights with the Electra took place in January 1959.

Specifications:

Engine: Four Allison 501-D13 turboprops.
Maximum cruise speed: 405 mph (652 km/h).
High Range: 27,000 feet (8230 metres).
Range: 2,500 miles (4,023 km).

Astrojet:
N6118Al was one of the Electer in the colors of American Airlines. The term Astrojet was used for their aircraft with a striking blue stripe on the fuselage.
Overall, the Lockheed L-188 Electra was an innovative aircraft that had excellent performance on short runways and at high altitudes. Despite its problems, it remains an interesting machine in aviation history
